A recent study suggests that individuals who stop using new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
A Lifelong Disease?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "underscore the chronic nature of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated behavioural management.
